Aya!

This page is for the benefit of anyone interesting in learning about the Myaamia (Miami) language, especially for anyone living in the Fort Wayne area (Kiihkayonki ). We include some basic vocabulary and information about the annual day camp as well as links to other pages and organizations that focus on Myaamia.

For the last couple of summers, we have had a day camp for children interested in learning Myaamia language and culture at Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne (IPFW) on the banks of the St. Joseph River (Kociihsasiipi ).

Interested in Learning the Myaamia Language?

It is difficult to learn any new language, especially for an adult. If you are trying to learn Myaamia, decide how much you want to learn and pace yourself. If you start out trying to learn everything at once, you will very quickly become discouraged. Pace yourself. Also, it is much more difficult if you try to do it on your own. Find some other person or people who are also trying to learn and speak as much as you can, even if it is only a few words. You will encourage each other to reach further. Don't be judgemental toward yourself or others. The important thing is to speak the language as much as you can so don't be afraid of making mistakes. You will get better over time.
