The TENL program can be added to your chosen major or taken as a stand-alone credential. TENL courses can be completed in 3-4 semesters (1.5-2 years). You must meet with the TENL director before you can matriculate into the TENL program.

Recommended Majors that fit well with the TENL Certificate


  1. Anthropology
  2. Communication Sciences and Disorders
  3. Computer Science
  4. Education
  5. English
  6. Human Services
  7. Marketing
  8. Sociology
  9. Spanish
  10. While these are recommended, you can add on the TENL certificate to any major while you're obtaining your Bachelor's degree or even after you graduate. Explore your options for majors and minors here.

If you want to teach English abroad


  1. Obtain the TENL certificate
  2. Complete your major + TENL certificate
  3. Complete your Master's program + TENL certificate

If you want to teach in schools in the U.S.A.


  1. Obtain a Bachelor's of Science in Education + TENL (i.e. ELL) licensure
  2. Teachers who already hold a teaching license need to complete the TENL program to qualify for the add-on license in the content area of “Teachers of English Learners”.
  3. Individuals who would like to teach in the U.S. but do not yet have their initial teaching license should first consider the Transition to Teaching program.
