Course Sequence
There are 7 courses (21 credits) in the TENL program. Courses are typically scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays, 4:30-7:15 PM, and take place on campus/in-person. The courses are offered in a fixed cycle, so it is vital to meet with the TENL director and your major advisor before signing up for classes.

Spring semester
- LING 42203/ LING 51201 - Methods and Materials for TESOL II
- LING 43200/ LING 53201 - Second Language Acquisition
Summer I (6-week) 2025
- LING 43200/ LING 53201 - Second Language Acquisition (Hybrid )
Summer II (6-week) 2025
- LING 40203 - Structure of Modern English (TESOL)/ LING 50200 - Introduction to the English Language (Hybrid)
Fall semester
- LING 47000/ LING 53500 - TENL/TESOL Practicum
*If you are in the TTT - TENL track, your course sequence is slightly different. Check your required program of study.
**You cannot obtain the TENL certificate if you have not passed the courses with a C or higher.

FAQs about the TENL Courses
- It depends on your circumstances and how many courses you decide to take, but the TENL program can be completed within 1.5-2 years.
The courses are rigorous as they are 400/500-level courses. You can expect the following:
- 2-5 hours of readings/week
- Oral and written assignments that require you to use academic language - We use an academic writing rubric to evaluate your work.
- Scholarly discussions related to linguistics, curriculum and pedagogy, bi/multilingual education, education policy, assessment, and more
- 2-5 hours of clinical/field experience/ week
- High expectations of professional behavior
