Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Did I see a Northern Scarletsnake?
Fairly frequently folks from southern Indiana contact us thinking they have seen a Northern Scarletsnake (Cenophora coccinea) even thought they are not in Floyd County. While anything is possible, this has always turned out to be the Eastern Milksnake (Lampropeltis triangulum), usually the red phase (L, t, syspila). Below are images of both the Scarletsnake (left) and the Eastern Milk snake (right) for a visual comparison. We will work on getting better pictures for you. The belly of the Northern Scarletsnake is pale and lacking blotches or stripes of other color.
