Course Sequence

There are 7 courses (21 credits) in the TENL program. Courses are typically scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays, 4:30-7:15 PM, and take place on campus/in-person. The courses are offered in a fixed cycle, so it is vital to meet with the TENL director and your major advisor before signing up for classes.

Students must take the following courses in this sequence:

Prerequisite: Offered in the Fall, Spring, and Summer

  1. LING 10300 - Introduction to the Study of Language (Online)

Fall semester

  1. LING 42102/ LING 51101 - Methods and Materials for TESOL I
  2. LING 46000/ LING 51901 - Language in Society

Spring semester

  1. LING 42203/ LING 51201 - Methods and Materials for TESOL II
  2. LING 43200/ LING 53201 - Second Language Acquisition

Summer I (6-week)

  1. LING 53201 - Second Language Acquisition (Hybrid - Tentatively restricted to TTT and in-service teachers)

Summer II (6-week)

  1. LING 40203 - Structure of Modern English (TESOL)/ LING 50200 - Introduction to the English Language (Hybrid)

Fall semester

  1. LING 47000/ LING 53500 - TENL/TESOL Practicum

*If you are in the TTT - TENL track, your course sequence is slightly different. Check your required program of study.

**You cannot obtain the TENL certificate if you have not passed the courses with a C or higher.

FAQs about the TENL Courses

  1. It depends on your circumstances and how many courses you decide to take. Starting in AY 2025-26, the TENL program can be completed within (1.5-2 years).

The courses are rigorous as they are 400/500-level courses. You can expect the following:

  1. 2-5 hours of readings/week
  2. Oral and written assignments that require you to use academic language - We use an academic writing rubric to evaluate your work.
  3. Scholarly discussions related to linguistics, curriculum and pedagogy, bi/multilingual education, education policy, assessment, and more
  4. 2-5 hours of clinical/field experience/ week
  5. High expectations of professional behavior

Experiential Learning: Field and Teaching Experience


The TENL program is a pre-professional program. Pre-service students are expected to complete observations and teaching hours in 4 of the TENL courses (approximately 2-5 hours/week). Make sure you allot time for this requirement.

In-service teachers have different field requirements. In-service teachers are expected to prepare and conduct an action research project that addresses and improves aspects of their current practice. Specific details will be shared in the TENL courses.
