Leaves are silvery beneath, with a rather delicate appearance. It tolerates a wide range of soils, but is naturally found only in wet or moist places along stream banks and lake edges. A good tree for poor soils, and a fast grower, but the wood is weak and brittle. Swelling spring buds are an important source of food for squirrels. |
