A red oak type, Scarlet Oak resembles Black Oak, except inner bark is gray or reddish. Leaves are glossy on top with 5 to 7 bristle-tipped lobes. Sinuses, indentations between lobes, are deep - more than half-way to the midrib. Unfringed cap encloses acorn 1/2 to 2/3. In Indiana, it is restricted to sandy ridges of the lake region, and to crests and slopes in Southern Indiana. Fall color is brilliant red.
