A vigorous pioneer species on abandoned farm fields which can sprout from underground runners and roots. It is intolerant of shade. Sassafras is an aromatic tree with three different leaf shapes: an unlobed oval, mitten-shaped, and three-lobed. Bark of the root contains an oil, which has been used for tea and root beer. Fall color is excellent, from gold through orange and bright red.
