Sand Hickory is a medium tree to 50 feet in height that grows in dry, sandy upland soils. It has a compound leaf with 7-9 leaflets, which has pubescence beneath and on the axis. The top of the leaf has scales, which feel like fine sand when touched. In Indiana, it is a rare tree in only a few locations in the southwestern counties.
