Bark of this tree is tight and rough, not shaggy like Shagbark Hickory. Compound leaves have 7 to 9 leaflets, and the underside of leaves, leaf stems, and new branches are hairy. Edible nut is 4-angled with a thick husk, and is eaten by wildlife. Dark brown hard wood is used for tool handles.
