Gray Birch is a small tree reaching a height of 20 to 30 feet. Bark is grayish white with little exfoliation compared to River Birch. Leaves are triangular with a narrow point, doubly serrated and fall color is light yellow. Branches become reddish brown with in a year and a dark V-shape patch appears just below. Gray Birch will grow in the poorest soils. Its wood is used for spools, barrel hoops and fuel. Several species of birds feed on the seeds and buds.
