Its layered branching pattern, clear white flower bracts that appear before the leaves in spring, and its ability to flower well in the shaded understory make this the queen of flowering trees. However, Dogwood Anthracnose, a leaf and stem fungal disease, has killed most native flowering dogwoods in the forests of the Middle Atlantic and New England states.
