A small tree to 30 feet in height with heart-shaped leaves. Red-purple flowers open very early in the spring, creating a haze of color in the bare woods. Flat, 3-inch long pods hang on the tree into winter. Bark of older trees is scaly and reddish-brown. A form with white flowers occurs rarely in Indiana.
