A white oak type found on dry limestone outcrops and alkaline soils. Leaves have coarse, gland-tipped teeth, and are downy on lower surface. The cap encloses 1/4 to 1/2 of the acorn. Acorns are sweet and eaten by several wildlife species. The now extinct passenger pigeon readily fed on nuts from this tree.
