One of the largest and most valuable trees of Indiana’s forests. Its dark wood is used for fine furniture. Nuts are flavorful with a unique pungency, and have a hard shell with a non-splitting husk. Compound leaves have 15 to 25 leaflets. Bark is dark brown and deeply furrowed. Trees can reach a height of 100 feet. Hydrojuglone, a chemical found in plant parts often inhibits growth of other plants in the soil surrounding Black Walnut trees.
