Teaching Innovations as a Strategic Path to Promotion and Tenure

Innovations in teaching should not occur merely to try something new. Innovations should be tried because instructors have sought feedback from the learning situation, reflected on the challenges and opportunities therein, and decided that a particular innovation or “improvement” will enrich the student learning environment. For promotion/tenure, you must be able to share that reflection, innovation, and the outcomes of the innovation with others and to argue that the innovation leads to high quality teaching. This presentation will talk about strategies for doing and documenting the reflection, innovation, sharing and quality of your teaching for promotion and tenure.
In order to successfully use innovation at a path to promotion and tenure, we need to do three things:
- Recognize innovation when we do it:
- Innovation does not equal something that no one has ever thought of before, it is not some fantastic new idea that will shake the foundations of college teaching forever – it means “change”, specifically the New Oxford American Dictionary (ebook 2008) on my ipad states that to innovate is to “make changes in something established esp. by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.”
- Pay attention to our reflections that lead to innovation
- Document the reason you felt a change was necessary
- Document your own thinking (i.e., journal it for now) about what the potential issues are, problems you will try to address
- Document the innovation and its results (trying something new is not a successful innovation, it’s just an innovation).
- First, consider what “success” of the innovation will mean – learning (we hope so)? Student engagement with the material? Students learning team building skills? Diversity enrichment? Higher retention in the class (i.e. more students coming better prepared and successfully finishing the course) lower DWF rates?
- If possible, do before and after tests – i.e., assignments, exams, quizzes, essays, students responses to CATs with the “old” way and the “new” way
- If not possible, get feedback from peer review of observations of the innovation – did students seem engaged? Did they seem to be learning the concepts? Does the innovation “look” successful from an outside perspective?
- Get feedback from peers outside your institution but within your discipline – i.e., write it up – submit it to a teaching journal!
- Use “expert” feedback – people with reputations for using this kind of innovation or people with reputations for being strong teachers (textbook authors often work) of this content
- Get feedback from students – use their assignments, student evaluations, unsolicited comments, etc. to provide evidence of success of the innovation
Some examples that I have used to help with:
- P & T: using movies in relational classes – sent syllabus and assignments to an “expert” in teaching this content (responding to the need for students to be able to “analyze” a relationship without the course becoming a therapy session);

The publication of my lesson plan on social construction of marital reality in a national journal also demonstrates the respect that peers outside IPFW have for my teaching skills
