Chapter 12

April 18 - May 1

Saturday - Tuesday (4/19): Quiz over Unit Seven: Chapter 12

Wednesday (4/20): Post your initial answer in your group discussion forum (see information on Units page for Successfully Using Discussion Forums) to the following:

Watch the video Grace1 in Blackboard (you may need Quicktime (free download) to watch this.). What do you feel Tracy should do?

NOTE: Be sure to consider whether this is a situation of sexual harassment. Not sure? Consider the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's definition.

Action: Sentence or two

Support: Paragraph or two that provides support, explanation, reasoning using what you have learned in the chapter

Wednesday - Wednesday (4/27): Discussion of case study in your groups. Final answers (in the above format) must be posted in your forum with the topic "FINAL ANSWER FOR YOURGROUPNAME".

Friday (4/22): Your seventh interpersonal analysis addition to your webpage is due this unit. To help you better understand some of the concepts in the course and be able to apply them to improve your own interpersonal communication skills, you need to:

Choose two of the following:

  1. Choose a specific workplace and analyze the three aspects of workplace culture: norms, artifacts, and values (page 405-406). Evaluate the positive or negative impact of each of these. Does this culture have a generally defensive or generally supportive climate?
  2. Some companies have explicit policies prohibiting workplace romance or dating. What do you feel are some potential advantages and disadvantages of such policies for the business? for the employees?
  3. Analyze a present or past supervisor (or yourself if you are or have been in a supervisory role) according to the five principles of effective downward communication (p. 423). How well did he/she (you) follow these principles? How much do you feel following these principles affects the mixed-status relationship?
  4. Analyze how well you give compliments and constructive criticism. Are you effective or ineffective? Why? If you feel you are less effective than you could be, what could you do to improve?

Friday - Thursday (4/28): Comment on group member’s webpages in the Unit Seven Webpage Comments forum. Answer the following questions for each of your group member’s webpages:

1. First check your group members’ webpages to be sure they have:

2. Then, choose one person who you feel “taught” you something about this unit’s concepts – what did that person teach you with his/her website? Why does learning about that concept matter?

Friday (4/29): Final revisions are completed to your webpage.

Thursday - Sunday (5/1): Debate final answers for case study in Unit Seven Debate Discussion Forum (see Units page for information on Debating Final Answers).

Last unit - just the final to go!!
