Widespread across eastern North America, White Oak is also found throughout Indiana except around Lake Michigan. White Oak is pyramidal when young, large and imposing with wide-spreading branches when mature. Leaves are whitish below and have 5 to 9 rounded lobes. The acorn cap has raised bumps rather than smooth scales, and encloses 1/4 to 1/3 of the acorn. Acorns provide food for many wildlife species. Growth is very slow, but it is an important timber tree as the wood is of high value.
