A white oak type and a medium sized, long-lived tree found in lowlands and swamps of the north central and northeastern forests. It is also drought resistant. Leaves are whitish and downy on the lower surface with 6 to 10 pairs of large, rounded, lobe-like teeth. The bowl-shaped cap covers about 1/3 of the acorn. Acorns provide food for many species of wildlife. Bark on branches peels back to give a slightly shaggy appearance.
