A white oak type, and primarily a southerly species found in low, wet woodlands. Leaves have coarse, regular teeth, and are densely downy on the lower surface. The fall color is bright red. A thick cap encloses 1/3 of the acorn which is sweet and eaten by many species of wildlife.
