A red oak type, leaves are glossy above with 5 to 9 bristle-tipped lobes. A thick, shallow cup encloses about 1/4 of the acorn. Buds are sharply pointed, and bud scales appear waxed. Shumard Oak is one of the largest southern red oaks.
