Naturally grows in moist soil along streams and in bottomlands. Trunks of young trees are shiny and peeling, and vary in color from silvery-gray to cinnamon-brown. Frequently planted in clumps as an ornamental. Tolerant of highly acid soils, but under drought conditions, inner leaves will turn yellow and fall, even in midsummer.
