A red oak type with yellowish inner bark. Acorns are yellowish and very bitter. The cup-shaped cap encloses 1/3 to 1/2 of the acorn. Leaves have 5 to 7 bristle-tipped lobes. Its lower branches droop. In Indiana, this tree is found only in the north. Northern Pin Oak is very similar to Pin Oak, though it is not susceptible to chlorosis in high pH soils.
