A large shrub or small tree in the Citrus family, hoptree is often multi- stemmed. Wafer-like seeds remain on the tree into winter. Generally found in the shady understory of moist woodlands, it is a primary food source for the caterpillar stage of Indiana's Giant Swallowtail butterflies.
