A tree of medieval appearance, its trunk is dark with very large spines. On old trees, spines form dense, branched clusters. Honeylocust is typically a bottomland species. Leaves are pinnate or doubly pinnate. Greenish-yellow flowers are a good source of nectar for bees. Long, flat pods are sweet and eaten by wildlife. Cultivars of a thornless form are available for ornamental use.
