Hemlock is a graceful and soft-looking pyramidal tree. Cones are small. It grows best in acidic, moist, well-drained soil. Unlike most other conifers, it tolerates shade well. It is frequently used in landscaping, but its natural distribution in Indiana is very spotty, seemingly relegated to protected slopes above streams.
