A common, mid-sized tree of the red oak type. It resembles Scarlet Oak, except the inner bark is yellow and bitter. Leaves are glossy on top, with 5 to 9 pointed, bristle-tipped lobes. Acorns are often striated and enclosed 1/3 to 1/2 in a deep, bowl-like cap.
