Black Maple is a large tree 60-100 feet in height. It has many characteristics similar to Sugar Maple with a few notable exceptions. Black Maple is more slowly growing. Its leaf is a darker green above, has smoother edges, is more three lobed, droops on the edges, has stipules or fleshy ears at the base and has more yellow fall color. The two often hybridize with a varying combination of each. In Indiana, it is less common than Sugar Maple.
