Black Hickory is a small tree to 20-30 feet in height that grows in dry upland soils. Leaves are compound with 5-7 leaflets whose parts are covered with rust colored pubescence, as are the young buds. In Indiana, it is a rare tree in only a few locations in the southwestern counties.
