A small tree to 30 feet in height, often forming large colonies by suckering from the roots. Flowers are white, in small clusters, and open before the leaves. Fruits are yellow, turning red at maturity. Branches become spiny as the tree ages. Bark is dark with prominent lenticels or corky ridges. American Plum is frequent to common throughout Indiana.
