A very slow-growing tree which reaches greatest size in the alluvial soils of the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys. Has smooth, thin, gray bark into which intials or dates are sometimes carved; these wounds last for decades and can be an entry point for infection into the tree. Beech nuts are eaten by birds and squirrels. Winter buds are very long and pointed.
