Part VIII Analyzing Group Communication

Step One: Preparing Before August 28

Read Readings 22-24 and Participant Observation reading in Blackboard

Step Two: Understanding On August 28

For each method of analyzing group communication: Interaction Process Analysis, Narrative Analysis, and Evaluating Group Discussion and Participant Observation briefly describe (orally):

1) Why/when would you use this method?

2) How do you use this method?

3) What are the drawbacks of this method?

Step Three: Experiencing On August 28

Analyze a group discussion according to the method your group is assigned. Present the results.

Step Four: Reflecting by September 4 (can email as an attachment, drop in my mailbox or bring to class)

Write a 1-2 page paper which evaluates and compares the methods (using the information you have gained from Steps One-Three). Talk about 1) which method seemed to work best, in this context, and 2) why. 3) In what contexts might the other methods be more useful?
